Nepal Earthquake

nepal map

The Nepal earthquake of 2015 was an awful event. If you study it as a case study, it will help you in both the Development Gap and Restless Earth topics:

For Development gap it is a case study of how a natural event or natural disaster can restrict development in a country. so you would look at the short and long term effects and say how that would slow down Nepal becoming more developed

For Restless Earth, you need to know about the causes, effects (short and long term) and responses (short and long term again) to the quake

I have put ALL the resources you could possibly need on one simple padlet page

Question 2 – Changing Urban Environments “Improving Squatter Settlements”

Question 4  – Development Gap “International Aid” (and how it is sustainable)

Question 6 – Tourism “Tourism in an Extreme Environment”

We do

  • Rocinha and the Favela Bairro
  • Water aid (and fair trade if you wish)
  • Antarctica

I won’t link to all the resources on this blog for these 3 case studies. I am sure you can use the category cloud and find them. But here is a link to the skeleton revision cards I have produced that show the sections within each case study you need to know

Revising some of Changing urban Environments

This revision lesson is partly based around the excellent www.coolgeography.co.uk website

It covers housing in richer cities and squatter settlements in poorer ones. It looks at brown and greenfield sites and includes a link to an excellent Water Aid video. This means you are also revising the development gap project and ideas of aid and sustainable aid and international aid

The water aid video mentioned in the last 2 slides can be found here

What a lot of revision 🙂

Water Aid example of international aid

This video only 18 minutes long almost teaches the whole of the aid topic and half the development gap one on its own; its astounding…. well done Water Aid… watch it and look at:

  1. what makes areas less developed?
  2. how are people trying to help themselves
  3. what are the conditions in a shanty town?
  4. what impact does clean water and toilets proved to people? (this is the one covered most in this)
  5. how can you measure development?

Cartoon Teaches Development Gap and Restless Earth

This from the US paper found at http://www.theeagle.com Drawn by Jeff Koterba

nepal cartoon

What does it say about:

Why an earthquake in a poorer country would have worse effects than in a richer country? (Restless Earth topic)

and

What obstacles are there to poorer countries developing themselves? (Development Gap topic)

and

What problems are there getting aid to those that need it? (Development gap AND Restless Earth topics)
