Get a better GCSE grade by testing yourself

markscheme

Looking at all the study on studying, the best way to revise is to include self-testing (teachers can read this article here and thank you to @C_Hendrick on twitter for showing me it).

I am attaching a 20-25 mark test for each of our 6 topics. none of them of course, cover the whole topic, however they do at least give you an idea about what you DONT YET KNOW WELL ENOUGH. My advice would be to

  1. take the test
  2. check your answers
  3. revise the areas you were weakest at
  4. take the test again a couple of days later
  5. do some exam questions on the topic

Constructive and Destructive Waves

You would do well to find a better page on the web to explain the differences between these two types of wave than the BBC Bitesize revision one. So click here to have a look. I have posted before about waves in general. You can read that here

There is also a video here, made by another teacher that explains it quite well. It comes with a music soundtrack from the 1980s – around about the time I took my GCSE (well it was called an O’Level in those days)

Typical exam questions on this might be:

Describe the 3 features of a constructive or destructive wave (3 marks)

or

Explain how a constructive or destructive wave shapes the coast. (4 marks)

Help in revising Case Studies – Revision Cards

In the last couple of years a lot more pupils are using cards to help them revise. I worry that you¬†may either be taking the wrong type of notes or maybe just copying out notes. Neither of which is going to help much. Therefore, I have drawn out some very simple ‘skeleton case study cards’ to guide you. After completing each one the best thing, as always, is to try a past exam question.¬†(the top left box says PSI or Place Specific Information, which is the unique details, location and¬†facts about¬†the event or place you need to know)

I also include a link below to the case study revision cards by topic

Changing Urban Environments Skeleton Revision Cards

Development Gap Skeleton Revision Cards

Tourism Skeleton Revision Cards

Restless Earth Skeleton Revision Cards

Water on the land Skeleton Revision Cards

Revising Coastal Defence in Holderness

The video below is really good for (1) locating coastal defences on the Holderness coast and giving you great Place Specific information (PSI). (2) It also talks clearly about the advantages and disadvantages of different defences and finally (3) it explains about the sustainability of each method

However, the exam question mentioned is for a different board and therefore I would recommend watching up to about 3:50.

Those of you doing the higher paper could try the 2014 question 7(d) worth 8 marks. It is about discussing “the costs and benefits of using hard engineering to reduce the risk of cliff collapse” The full exam paper and resources can be found here. As an exam tip you really need to concentrate on what the word DISCUSS means here – you need to talk about the advantages and disadvantages to get yourself the higher marks for this

If you are doing the foundation paper there was a very similar question that year, though it was worth 6 marks instead; it asked “explain how hard engineering can reduce the risk of cliff collapse”. To access that 2014 paper click here¬†
